General information, not legal or insurance advice, and not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. Your policy’s wording and your state’s law decide, and both change. For help with your claim, your state insurance department’s consumer line and legal aid are free.
We can’t answer questions about your claim
We are not an insurer, an agent or broker, a public adjuster or a law firm, and writing to us creates no attorney-client relationship. We can’t answer questions about individual claims. That means we can’t say whether your damage is covered, what your insurer owes, what your deadline is, whether to file, whether an estimate or a denial is right, or whether to sue. We can’t review your policy, an estimate or a denial letter, and we don’t contact insurers, adjusters or mortgage companies for anyone. We can’t recommend a public adjuster, a contractor, a roofer, a restoration company, an appraiser or a lawyer, and we don’t refer anyone to one. Writing to us does not stop a proof-of-loss date, a suit limit or any other deadline running.
If you need help with your own claim, start with your insurer, in writing. Every state has an insurance department that takes consumer questions and complaints about insurers, free of charge: the NAIC’s directory of state insurance departments lists each one, and our complaint page by state links the complaint pages we have confirmed. The Legal Services Corporation’s search finds legal aid offices it funds, and a licensed attorney in your state can look at your policy and your facts. For a claim under a federal flood policy, the route for appealing to FEMA is set out in 44 CFR 62.20, and our NFIP claims page explains it.
Reporting an error
Please include the address of the page, the day count, figure, rule or sentence you think is wrong, and a link to a statute, regulation, department bulletin, policy form or other official source for the right information if you have one. We check every report against the source. State claim rules change after legislative sessions and new regulations, so a report that a rule has changed is especially welcome. Our corrections page explains what happens next.
Insurers, contractors, advertisers and firms
We don’t sell sponsored posts, links, reviews, listings or placements, and we don’t take affiliate deals, sell leads or make referrals. If you publish a form, a rule or a figure we cite, or a fact on our page about your field is wrong, send a source and we will check it like any other report.
What not to send
Please don’t send policies, declarations pages, claim or policy numbers, estimates, denial letters, photos of your home, account numbers, Social Security numbers or other personal details, yours or anyone else’s. We don’t need them to check a page, and we won’t review them. Our privacy policy explains how we handle what you send us.
